Hub drives don't bring the motor and the gears together the way a mid drive does, and they add quite a bit of mass to the rear wheel, which can make it harder to clear obstacles in technical terrain. A mid drive allows the gear adjustments you'll need on difficult uphill sections and gives a more centered bike weight-wise. But whether you need that depends on how exactly the trails you're looking to ride turn out.
